These longer-term visas must be applied for in advance through a South African embassy or mission abroad. They are available for visitors with valid reasons to remain in the country beyond 90 days, such as:

• Long-term medical treatment 
• Visiting children studying in South Africa 
• Accompanying a minor attending school 
• Volunteer or NGO work 
• Academic or research sabbatical

Depending on your circumstances and supporting documents, these visas may be issued for up to three years.
Applicants need to show proof of financial support, a clear reason for the stay, and complete documentation.
