South Africa offers a favourable retirement option for foreign nationals seeking long-term residence in a stable and welcoming environment. With a moderate climate, access to private healthcare, and a relatively low cost of living, the country is an attractive destination for individuals with sufficient independent income.

A retirement visa provides a legal framework for eligible applicants to reside in South Africa without the need to work or invest.
At Craig Smith & Associates, we offer specialist legal guidance throughout the retirement visa process—from assessing your eligibility to preparing and submitting a fully compliant application. With over two decades of experience in South African immigration law, Craig Smith and his team ensure that your relocation is handled with clarity, precision, and legal security.

What is a Retirement Visa?

A retirement visa (also known as a retired person’s visa) is issued under Section 20 of South Africa’s Immigration Act. It allows foreign nationals who meet minimum income or pension requirements to live in South Africa without the need to work or invest.

The visa is typically issued for up to 4 years at a time and can be renewed. In some cases, it may also qualify for permanent residence, depending on the applicant’s long-term plans and financial profile.

Key Requirements

To qualify for a retirement visa in South Africa, you must:

  • Provide proof of a monthly income of at least ZAR 37,000, which can come from:

    • Pension or retirement funds

    • Annuities

    • Fixed income investments

    • Rental income or dividends

  • Demonstrate that the income is guaranteed for the duration of your stay
  • Show proof of medical cover and accommodation in South Africa

You are not required to work or start a business under this visa category, but it may be possible to apply for an endorsement if you wish to engage in limited work or consulting

Applicants who meet the same financial requirements on a permanent basis may also apply directly for permanent residence under Section 27(c) of the Immigration Act. Craig Smith & Associates can assess whether this route is more suitable for your long-term plans.
